Anna Katz
Anna was born in Iowa and grew up on a farm in southern Michigan. She later moved to Missouri to attend college, completing a Bachelors in Studio art and a Master of Arts in Teaching. Her ceramic works explore themes of Midwestern life. Focusing primarily on food, farms, and nostalgia, she uses scale and context to elevate everyday objects to pieces worthy of contemplation.
“My work in ceramics focuses predominately on food—a subject chosen as an invitation to inclusivity. My pieces have easily recognizable elements designed to celebrate the banality of everyday items and invoke memories of school lunches, summer vacations, and family reunions. I use scale and context to elevate these items to places otherwise reserved for more traditional items of beauty and reverence, with the intention that viewers will momentarily delight at the absurdity of the contradiction.”
